New Era of Mining in Ohio Valley
The Ohio Valley, spanning Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky, is rapidly emerging as a hub for Bitcoin mining and blockchain innovation.
Pennsylvania
Canada-based Bitfarms has partnered with Stronghold Digital Mining to deploy 10,000 miners at its Scrubgrass site in Venango County, aiming to improve efficiency and expand its U.S. operations. This development builds on the growth of crypto mining in the state, following TeraWulf's deployment of manufactured mining equipment at its 50 megawatts (MW) Nautilus facility in Berwick. Notably, the Nautilus bitcoin mine is powered by the 2.5 GW Susquehanna nuclear plant, owned and operated by Talen Energy.
West Virginia
Blockchain Power Corp, a Florida-based Bitcoin mining firm, has established four active sites in Preston and Monongalia counties. Located in Hazelton, Denver and Miracle Run, these sites represent a strategic investment in the region's digital economy.
Ohio
NASDAQ-listed bitcoin mining and data center operator, Bitdeer, is expanding its power footprint in Ohio. The company has leased a facility in Hannibal Industrial Park, Clarington, securing up to 570 MW of power capacity. The initial 266 MW is expected to come online in Q3 2025, with the remaining 304 MW under review. This marks Bitdeer's second project in Ohio, following a 221 MW site in Stark County, slated for completion in 2025.
Kentucky
Blockware Solutions is a privately-held Bitcoin mining and infrastructure company based in Chicago, with a 20 MW mining facility in Belfry, KY and a 30 MW facility in Paducah, KY. Built in 2022, Blockware’s data centers allow customers to co-locate their mining rigs and use Blockware as a miner hosting service. Notably, the Bitcoin mining site in Belfry was constructed from a repurposed coal mine.
Regional Impact
These developments signal significant growth, innovation and job creation in the Ohio Valley. By leveraging local resources, these companies are driving the region's digital economy forward, solidifying its position as a hub for Bitcoin mining and blockchain technology.
